Why is this role important?

Senior Director of Construction / National

The director of construction job description entails overseeing and handling various parts of construction projects, such as planning, directing, coordinating the activities of workers, choosing contractors, and monitoring performance.

A director of construction is responsible for overseeing the completion of construction projects by handling planning, budgeting, and making key decisions to ensure that construction projects are in conformity with the proposed budget and are completed on time.

Some of the duties that may be executed by a director of construction include directing and monitoring construction projects from conception to completion, examining project in-depth to scheduling deliverables and estimating costs, and coordinating and directing construction workers and subcontractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively promote a positive and productive work environment, aligned with our Blue Culture core values.
  • Manage and develop relationships with consultants, vendors and contractors.
  • Plan and develop projects with the Real-Estate and Operations teams.
  • Execution and management of the Capital Plan and special projects, Nationally
  • Cost control and reporting to the leadership team, review project budgets and schedules
  • Approve all plans submitted by landlords for accuracy in accordance with schedules (leaseholds)
  • Work effectively and collaborate with Real-Estate/ Legal, Design, Maintenance, Procurement and Operations teams.   
  • Manage and coordinate all activities related to Construction, Engineering, Contracts, Environmental Affairs, Estimation and Due Diligence  
  • Site visits, participate in site meetings.
  • Establish a construction center of excellence; develop construction related tools (processes, procedures, training material, technology enhancements) to improve Loblaws ability to support our GC partners as they deliver projects
  • Work with internal teams to provide a construction perspective on how to successfully incorporate scope, initiatives, standards into projects (LOI’s/ Schedule C’s).
  • Analyze, manage, and mitigate risks
  • Promote and enforce consistency of construction processes and policies, aligned with LCE compliance (governance). 
  • Provide expertise to resolve project-based construction issues as and when required
  • Provide guidance on local code and regulation compliance requirements
  • Identify and lead initiatives to support the growth and development of our team/ coaching and succession planning.
  • Overseeing the construction project from the conception phase to the construction phase and coordinating deadlines to make sure that the project is completed within the stipulated timeframe.
  • Responsibility of evaluating and determining costs by preparing a budget, showing both soft and hard costs and coming up with ways to reduce budgets (value engineering)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Travel to stores pre/ post construction
  • 10+ years of construction experience, preferably in the commercial and Industrial spaces
  • 5+ years of people management and leadership experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or in any other construction-related field or equivalent experience.
  • Proven leadership skill in managing large teams and managing multiple project portfolios
  • Strong understanding of current workplace regulations, building codes, and legislation
  • Strong interpersonal skills, work efficiently and effectively with other professionals
  • Recognized experience in negotiation and conflict resolution from a partnership perspective
  • Strong ability to review and negotiate contracts
  • Ability to drive and ensure accountability
  • Ability to work with cost functional teams /departments
  • Excellent time management and decision-making skills to avoid and solve emerging problems.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written (bilingualism a plus).
  • Strong passion for the construction industry and forward thinking/ innovative. 
  • Strong ability for financial reporting, cash flow and forecasting
