Why is this role important?

Position: Senior Law Clerk / Paralegal

Reports to: Senior Director, Head of Litigation

We are looking to hire a full-time Senior Law Clerk / Paralegal to assist with litigation matters. Working in a fast-paced environment, the Senior Law Clerk / Paralegal will be an integral part of the Litigation Team working with external counsel and internal stakeholders to ensure the best result in our litigation cases. Reporting to the Senior Director, Head of Litigation, the Senior Law Clerk / Paralegal will work with a high degree of autonomy and perform substantive legal work related to litigation claims. The Senior Law Clerk / Paralegal will also manage, mentor, and coach the paralegal on the Litigation Team.  In addition, the Senior Law Clerk / Paralegal will be involved in implementing process improvements where needed.  This is a hybrid role.

Accountabilities:

  • Day-to-day management of commercial litigation matters

  • Liaise with the business to manage litigation/dispute matters, including providing analysis and advice, obtaining instructions, progress reporting, etc.

  • Negotiate and settle third party disputes, including drafting demand letters and releases

  • Facilitate document collection for preparation of Affidavits of Documents and answering undertakings

  • Manage litigation budget (including regular reporting)

  • Assist with the preparation of the quarterly litigation reports for Chief Legal Officer

  • Meet quarterly with Chief Legal Officer, finance, and external auditors on material litigation and litigation accruals

  • Manage, mentor, and coach the paralegal on the Litigation Team

  • Oversee and assist with Small Claims Court matters

  • Manage store-level incidents/violations relating to any municipal or provincial legislation

  • Legal Tracker/ matter database management, creating reports, monitoring legal spend, etc. 

  • Assist with garnishments, civil summons, bankruptcy and other legal process

More generally, help and support to colleagues on the legal team and in the business with respect to potential and actual litigation matters.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in litigation at a law firm or in-house legal department

  • Law Clerk Diploma or Paralegal Certification

  • Strong work ethic with the ability to multi-task and prioritize competing requests in a fast-paced environment

  • Team player who is customer/client focused

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written communication and client service skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Excellent organizational skills, with keen attention to detail and accuracy

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Confident and dependable, with strong initiative and ability to work both independently and in a fast-paced environment
