Reporting to the Director, Compliance Monitoring and Advisory this role will work closely with key stakeholders throughout the business to design, review, assess, test, and operationalize regulatory compliance programs and support their implementation within Loblaw Companies Limited and its affiliates. The role includes a large scope of regulatory compliance areas, including, but not limited to:  Food and Product Safety, Privacy, Environment, Pharmacy, Occupational Health & Safety, Liquor, Alcohol, Tobacco, Cannabis, Transportation, Payroll, etc. Candidate will engage with Subject Matter Experts to assist as required.


  • Assess the design of existing compliance programs by regulatory subject matter area (SMA). 
  • Incorporate risk-based approach model and framework to compliance risk areas
  • Conduct deep dives into specific regulatory compliance matters to assess risks and recommend appropriate management actions to align with the organization’s regulatory risk appetite
  • Ensure the regulatory compliance program components (such as governance model, regulatory compliance register and regulatory change management process, risk assessments, controls, monitoring and testing, incident management, training & communications and related policies and procedures) are effectively designed, remain relevant to the business, and are fit for purpose.
  • Conduct robust planning for Program Assessments leveraging work completed by other 2nd line and 3rd line functions, and desktop review of relevant resources including management reports, policies, incidents, training materials, benchmarking, best practices, frameworks, etc.
  • Develop reports for Compliance Program owners, sponsors and the executive team summarizing key findings from each engagement, recommendations, and management actions, as required
  • Lead the interaction with Subject Matter experts (SMEs) to ensure the objectives of each engagement are achieved on time, and within agreed upon quality standards  
  • maintain oversight of program and provide quarterly updates by attending meetings with compliance owners and enterprise risk management team.
  • Work with the SMEs to translate high-level legal and regulatory requirements into easy-to-understand yet detailed implementation plans. 
  • Work with the subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop relevant and user-friendly policies and procedures related to the regulatory SMA. 
  • Work with SMEs to monitor developments and trends that impact regulatory requirements, and ensure changes are reflected in both day-to-day operations and the relevant compliance program(s). 
  • Develop and maintain strong and collaborative relationships with management and the business across the enterprise
  • Support the development of key risk indicators through analytics, to measure the effectiveness of compliance risk management practices. 
  • Support incident management and resolution. 
  • Collaborate with other compliance leaders and the business to establish standards for monitoring, reporting, and implementing policies and procedures. 
  • Build presentations and speaking notes for various purposes and audiences. 

Proven Ability to:

  • Audit and assess compliance programs from a regulatory compliance perspective
  • Demonstrate a practical approach and a commitment to achieving excellence in compliance risk management built on a risk-based model. 
  • Build and nurture strong working relationships in a fast-paced working environment. 
  • Plan and execute communication plans that drive measurable business results. 
  • Leverage available methods to identify opportunities, execute results and measure impacts, to improve existing working conditions and processes. 
  • Stay current with the latest industry knowledge and trends, to inform decision-making and strategy development. 
  • Remain open to new ways of working, experiment with new methods, and adjust behavior to the changing business environment. 
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to adapt to change and meet timelines. 

Professional Competencies:

  • 5+ years of experience in a regulatory compliance function, retail operations or CPG capacity and/or public affairs in a regulated industry in the area of compliance, audit, legal, consulting, advisory or risk management. 
  • Deep knowledge and practical experience in risk and control fundamentals
  • Experience assessing, designing, implementing, and leading a compliance function, or other risk management experience in a large complex organization. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.   
  • Experience writing policies and procedures as they apply to areas of the law or regulations. 
  • Solid experience preparing and presenting effectively to various levels of management. 
  • Advanced knowledge of, and experience using the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).  
  • Strong analytical capabilities and ability to synthesize complex information into accessible and meaningful business guidance.  
  • A positive attitude, a desire to learn, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves to get work done, either independently or as part of a team.
